"Big Hipped" is a term that's best understood when you're checking out livestock from the rear. It's all about the shape of the hip and the width between the pin bones.

Imagine looking at a top athlete – you might notice how their strong, well-muscled hips contribute to their powerful performance. Similarly, when we say an animal is 'big hipped', we're complimenting the amount of muscle they have in their hip area.

This is generally seen as a positive trait. It's akin to saying the animal is 'stouter hipped', 'stouter pinned', 'more pulled apart in their pin set', or 'thicker ended'. We prefer these traits over animals that are smaller or narrower in the hip, much like how a sporty car is admired for its wide, muscular stance. So, 'big hipped' refers to livestock with wider, more muscular hips, which is often associated with stronger performance and a more appealing appearance.
